Brenda
Graduated: Abraham Lincoln High School, Denver
College:University of Denver
Career Goal: Business
Brenda is both a courageous risk-taker and a compassionate relationship-builder. She moved to the U.S. from Mexico during her junior year of high school without knowing how to speak or write a sentence of English. Her ability to pick up the language surpasses anything we have seen—and it is entirely due to her unwavering commitment and accountability to meet the high expectations she sets for herself. Brenda was the top student at her school in Mexico and wanted to continue that track record here. She amazed her teachers by volunteering to give presentations in front of the class and becoming involved in extracurricular activities immediately after arriving. Brenda graduated third in her class of 445 students, and teachers describe her as one of their best students. Brenda continues to display her language prowess by studying Chinese at the University of Denver and studying abroad in a business China program. With a warm personality and natural leadership skills, Brenda founded an organization that raises money and procures medical supplies for Project C.U.R.E. and organized an appreciation dinner to recognize custodial staff at DU for their service. Brenda is also an active member of the Latino Student Alliance and Black Student Alliance in college.

With the knowledge that he is a role model for his teammates, peers, and younger students, Kyle's high school teachers and friends explain that, "Kyle helps pull those around him up and continues to serve as an example of what can and does happen when you combine a lot of hard work and a little direction." Kyle, learning from his fulfilling and meaningful community service activities in high school, has chosen to immerse himself in the community at Stanford. He is a counselor for a week-long camp for children whose parents currently have cancer or have died from cancer, is on the leadership team for an organization that serves breakfast to a homeless shelter once a week, volunteers weekly at a church by leading a middle school bible study group, and will be the 2011-2012 editor for a Christian journal on campus.
