ALFREDO

Alfredo describes himself as a "serious, honest guy," but the first thing you'll notice talking to him is his tremendous passion for everything he is involved in. Alfredo has not only succeeded academically, but also lived his value that giving back drives success. A graduate of Denver South High School, Alfredo worked hard to finish in the top of his class, balancing his intense academic schedule with significant involvement in service and the arts. Now, in addition to a long list of extracurricular involvement at Colorado College, Alfredo serves as President of the Diversity Task Force and President of the Inter-Fraternity Council at Colorado College. In his job as a Multicultural Recruitment Advisor for the Office of Admissions, Alfredo encouraged diverse and low-income students from across the state to pursue their dreams of college. He continued to work with Eventually, Alfredo plans to improve the world by pursuing a career in international development.
ALHASSAN

Career Goal: Healthcare Administrator / Medical Health Officer
Alhassan grew up with his two brothers, first in refugee camps in Guinea and Sierra Leone and later in Denver. Based on his firsthand experience with loss and displacement, Alhassan has a deep commitment to making life better for those around him. His goal is to become a healthcare administrator in order to help improve the healthcare system in his country and community. He is working towards his goal by interning the past two summers with Kaiser Permanente in the department of Population and Prevention Services, volunteering for The Bridge Project, serving as a peer mentor with the Academic Advancement Center and the College of Business at CSU, and being a member of college's National Honor Society and African United. Ultimately Alhassan aims to build a clinic in his hometown in Liberia.
BRITTNI

Career Goal: Social and Environmental Activist
Brittni had a pride for her school and community that set her apart from most high school students. After getting involved with student council her first year of high school, she quickly climbed the administrative ladder to become Student Body President as well as the only Student Body Representative on her school board. In college, she realized her passion for social and environmental issues through involvement in the INVST PROGRAM. Brittni's volunteer experience, including work with Alternative Spring Breaks, Rocky Mountain Youth Corps, Mile High Youth Corps, and Feed My Sheep Homeless Shelter, has exposed her to complex issues and enabled her to develop valuable leadership skills necessary to seek solutions. Brittni is a big sister, role model, and dynamic leader who never passes an opportunity to help another.
DANIELLA

After having a rough start in high school, Daniella overcame difficult family circumstances by moving out of her house, supporting herself, and embracing her high school community and all it had to offer. She became involved with her high school's theater program, where she started acting in nearly three productions a year, and joined the varsity tennis team and the high school choir. Daniella has a natural stage presence and easily captures the attention of those around her. At UCD, Daniella is pursuing a pre-med path including earning her EMT license and spent a summer learning medical Spanish in Madrid. In addition to her studies, Daniella tutors and helped one of her students transition from a D- to a B student.
DAVID

Career Goal: Lawe
David has a selfless passion for helping his community. After years of going to school in one of the poorest school districts in Colorado, David decided that it was time for a change. With three of his peers, he founded the KIDS FIRST Committee, which helped to pass a $78 million bond for education. The money is now being used for a variety of initiatives, including the building of a new public high school and community college for Adam's County School District 14. David is currently studying law and masculinity as a Women's and Gender Studies major at Dartmouth and interned in Google's Legal Department in Mountain View, CA. He also gained an international perspective by studying abroad in Barcelona, Spain.
ELLE

Career Goal: Surgeon
Although Elle went to high school in the small town of Cripple Creek, she made the most of the experience by seizing every opportunity that came her way and even creating new opportunities for herself and others. A natural leader in high school, Elle pursued college involvement in the Residence Hall Association, Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society, and Health Advisory. She continues to give back to the community by volunteering at the UCCS Student Health Center, Cool Science, and Toys-for-Tots. This past year she conducted bioanalytical chemistry research, which is done in the hopes of better understanding neurological diseases such as Parkinson's. Additionally she has completed several internship programs at Woodland Park Surgical Associates, Woodland Park Family Medicine, and WhiteWave Foods (through Greenhouse Scholars), furthering her career goal to become an Orthopedic Surgeon.
ELLI

Elli's friends describe her as refreshingly honest, perpetually entertaining, genuinely witty, and passionately caring. Though Elli's family was plagued by serious health problems in the last several years, she faces each day with a smile on her face and an unmatched optimism. She has made the most out of her family's health problems by turning to her passion for film, which she uses as a way of expressing herself and bringing laughter to others. Based on networking advice she received at the Summer Symposium and from her Greenhouse Scholars mentor, Elli spent the last two summers interning with Lee Daniels Entertainment. This summer, she interned with a documentary filmmaker on "Sugar Babies", a film on the impact of diabetes. Elli is also passionate about her French studies and spent a semester in France.
ERIC

Career Goal: Heart Surgeon
Eric grew up in Burundi and Tanzania, and he came to the United States in the sixth grade without knowing a word of English. But despite his initial struggles to master the new language, Eric embraced the challenge, pushing himself to take the most challenging AP English courses at his school and using the lessons learned to excel in his studies and his competitive running. As a student at Columbia, Eric has embraced the challenge of moving to New York, running on Columbia's cross country and track teams, interning at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital, and taking advantage of all the city has to offer. Compassionate and thoughtful, Eric is truly excited to push himself even further to pursue a career in medicine and provide medical care in his native Burundi, Sudan, and other high-need areas around the world.
HANA

Growing up in Ethiopia, higher education wasn't an option for a young woman like Hana. Since coming to the United States in her sophomore year of high school, Hana has shown tremendous dedication to her academics, embracing the challenge of learning in a new language. At Aurora Central, Hana helped other Ethiopian families and students learn a new language. A talented artist with a strong grasp of math and science, Hana is pursuing an education in engineering and studio art. Hana aims to promote educational opportunities for young women in Ethiopia..

Career Goal: Bio-Medical Engineering
Jasser is a visionary leader. He's a hard worker, a relentless problem solver, and active in his community. He is able to inspire and motivate everyone around him: on the soccer field, in planning his high school's senior prom, and with his four younger siblings. Originally from Sudan, Jasser is passionate about bringing people of different faiths together through dialogue. He hopes to return to Sudan to fight issues of hunger and education. Mature, open-minded, introspective, and intellectually curious, Jasser is pursuing a five-year bachelor's and master's program in biomedical engineering at CSU and interns for Venoco Inc.
NORMA

Norma is an extremely motivated and accomplished student who is dedicated to helping individuals of all backgrounds reach for and pursue their full potential. In addition to tutoring and empowering young women through Girls Inc., Norma volunteers with the Denver Scholarship Foundation to inspire and support students back home to apply to college. Through these experiences she has realized her passion for cultivating and inspiring youth and plans to work in education in the future. A student at Stanford University, Norma has worked as a member of the Admit Weekend planning team, volunteered with Nuestra Graduacion and New Student Orientation, and has been involved with Ballet Folklorico de Stanford since her freshman year. She has also been involved in Ravenswood Reads, a tutoring and literacy program that partners with an East Palo Alto elementary school.
OTHELLO

Othello has proven his relentless drive to succeed despite overwhelming obstacles. His family fled from militia violence in Liberia, was evacuated from civil war in the Ivory Coast, and escaped hurricanes in Florida. On top of that, he spent months in the hospital because he was unprepared for cold Colorado winters while walking long distances to school. With amazing strength and integrity, Othello was a leader in academics and athletics at North High School and a motivational speaker for middle-school students. In college, Othello mentors visiting students at the DU, volunteers for Project Homeless Connect 9 and Habitat for Humanity, and serves on the DU Conduct Review Board. Whether through medicine or a career in international relations, Othello is committed to making a real change in his community and the world.
