During the holiday season of her senior year in high school, Amy's father was in a severe car accident that left him paralyzed and the family in financial difficulty. Despite the difficult times she has been through, her positive attitude and optimistic outlook are an inspiration. In college, Amy was proud of her ability to live on her own and do well. She recognizes the importance of the guidance and support provided by Greenhouse Scholars and her Mentor. Amy is combining her interest in working with youth with her dedication to pursuing a career in speech therapy.

Throughout her life, An has tried to learn through both education and volunteer work. In high school, she learned about other cultures and hardships facing people around the world by volunteering to help land-mine victims in Africa. She says, "knowledge is the most powerful tool anyone can have for success." At Colorado College, An once again rose to challenges and excelled. In addition to her academic pursuits, An studied abroad in Botswana and raised money for victims of conflicts in Africa through a program at Colorado College. She also volunteered with the Family Literacy Project, helping Hispanic adults learn English. After graduating with a BA in Neuroscience, An is studying for her PhD in Neuroscience at Colorado State University. An has also volunteered hundreds of hours already to Greenhouse Scholars after graduating from college. Her achievements, dedication to her projects, and kindness continue to inspire anyone who meets her.

Career Goal: Social Work
Ever since Ashton was in fourth grade she dreamed of going to college. Knowing that her family would not be able to pay for the education she wanted, she worked non-stop in high school in order to get accepted to a great college and earn scholarship support. Ashton is now the first Greenhouse Scholar to receive an advanced degree after graduating in May 2011 with a Masters in Social Work from the University of Denver. While working towards her graduate degree, Ashton secured a competitive internship at Denver Children's Hospital and continued to volunteer for Greenhouse Scholars. She also earned her BA in Communications from DU where she was on the leadership team for Campus Crusade for Christ and participated in community service at the Caring Hands Pregnancy Center. As an undergraduate, she had the life-changing opportunity to study abroad in Chile and improve her Spanish-speaking skills.

High School: Nederland Middle-Senior High School
College: Georgetown University
Career Goal: Goverment
Macy has a deep love of, and commitment to, her country. While an undergraduate student at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service—the nation's leading international studies program—Macy was a participant in the Language Exchange Program, a peer mentor for both the School for Foreign Service and the Georgetown Scholarship Program, and a Peace Fellow with the Advocacy Project. She had the opportunity to intern for Congressman Mark Udall and for the National Democratic Institute. Macy currently works for a government organization in Washington DC and has already given back to Greenhouse Scholars as a mentor and volunteer.

High School: Aurora Central High School
College: Drake University
Career Goal: Physician Assistant
Nicole rose to the challenge of succeeding in high school with inspiring determination. Even after completing all the necessary classes to finish her college preparatory curriculum, Nicole continued to challenge herself by taking more advanced classes at the local community college. After her father was laid off from his job of 25 years, it looked like Nicole would be unable to afford college at all. With the support of Greenhouse Scholars, Nicole was able to attend Drake University where she graduated with a BA in Biochemistry, Cell, and Molecular Biology. At Drake, also Nicole volunteered with Colleges Against Cancer and Habitat for Humanity. She is currently enrolled in a Physician Assistant Studies program at the University of St. Francis in Albuquerque.
