Kyran Kyran expresses herself with a thoughtful, quiet grace. One of her closest friends described her as a Romantic, and he meant that in the classical sense of someone passionate about philosophy, culture, politics, writing, and the natural world You have to dig deep to learn that Kyran's grace and maturity grew out of very challenging circumstances that were outside School became even more important to Kyran and she dedicated herself to studying. With her salary, her family could not afford luxuries and Kyran recalls long afternoons and weekends spent studying and writing papers on the library's computer. With all the hours spent at the library, she started to volunteer there. Kyran became committed to other opportunities for volunteerism, and was a member of her city's Teen Advisory Board and served as President of her school's Pay it Forward Club. Under her leadership, the Pay it Forward Club volunteered for other organizations, beautified local parks, and raised money to provide cars to economically disadvantaged families. Kyran understood well the challenges that came with trying to work or find a job without a car. Her family could not afford one – rather than taking advantage of her club's own program to fund cars for needy families, Kyran saved money from her part-time job to buy a bicycle. She used the bike to shuttle between school, her job, and her activities. Besides her volunteer work, Kyran was the captain of her high school's Tennis team, wrote for her school newspaper, ran track and cross country, won local and school poetry and writing competitions, and graduated in the top 15% of her class. Embodying the values of Greenhouse Scholars, Kyran was selected for the program and accepted into Bryn Mawr College. Excited to travel on a plane for the first time, Kyran loves exploring the areas around Bryn Mawr and thrives in her college classes. She continues to balance academics with her other interests and helping to support her family. While Kyran works long hours, she also mentors for the Belmont Charter mentoring program in college. Kyran best sums up her optimism and innate belief that there is something good or something to learn in every situation by saying, "Each obstacle I overcome makes me stronger, exceedingly resilient, determined, and driven." |
